We live with the Internet, television, social media, anxious modernity, rational stupidity, apathy, crude self-interest, fantasy and paranoia. Eva Illouz discusses the mentality of the recent period, using and departing from critical theory. It examines how the concept of self-realization, which includes psychological and political happiness, has changed shape. Following Adorno, he draws attention to the close relationship of different institutions in the process of commodification of the self: psychological persuasion, self-help literature, the advice industry, the state, pharmaceutical companies and internet technology, he argues, are intertwined in shaping the basis of the modern psychological self. It tries to examine the contradictory logic that connects emotions to capital.
Social distance results not from the absence of common characteristics, but from the abstract nature of these characteristics. Distance occurs not when people have nothing in common, but when they have a lot in common. In other words, distance stems from the fact that people now share a common and highly standardized language.
