Siyasalın Kıyısında
One of the prominent names among the recent left-wing French thinkers is Jacques Rancière. The philosopher, whose writings are especially discussed in the fields of the relationship between politics and democracy, the role of intellectuals and the philosophy of history, traces the concepts of politics and democracy invented in Athens to today's "return of the political" debates. His analysis of the subversive function of the concept of "people" and how the "uncounted", "unrecognized" segments of the people (slaves, women, proletarians, etc.) rose to the level of "counted" through their struggles is a very strong response to the theses of the "end of politics". In this edition, which has been enriched with new articles that were not included in the first French edition of the book and its English translation, we would like to draw our readers' attention especially to the articles "Uses of Democracy", "Ten Theses on Politics" and "Politics, Identification, Subjectivization".
About the author: French philosopher born in Algeria in 1940. Currently teaching philosophy at the University of Paris VIII (St. Denis), Rancière's name first came to the fore with the article he wrote for Althusser's two-volume compilation Lire le Capital (1965; Reading Capital). With On the Edge of the Political, first published in 1990, Rancière began to focus on the establishment of the "political" in the Western tradition. Rancière also made a splash with his writings about aesthetics, historical theory, literature and cinema.
