Political Body - Short Classics 29
When Rousseau's four-part work, The Social Contract, was published in 1762, it broke new ground by bringing to the fore the principles of popular sovereignty and general will. The philosopher put forward the conditions that would guarantee the existence of man as a free and intelligent being, the measures that would protect him from the tyranny of his fellow beings, and the measures that would compensate for the individual's loss of natural freedom with a higher type of freedom, with his famous theory of social contract and general will.
The Political Body covers the first part of this famous work of the author, which talks about the birth of society through a contract, and the third part, which deals with various forms of government as executive power. Although two hundred and fifty years have passed since Rousseau's theory was written, it continues to shed light on our current political debates.
