Sivil Toplum ve Ötesi
The concept of civil society entered underdeveloped countries carrying a duality within it. In particular, societies that had lived under military dictatorships for many years were very suitable soil for this ambiguous meaning of the project of establishing civil society: In these countries, a part of the left undertook to defend the individual freedoms of civil society based on the market mechanism against the oppressive states of military dictatorships.
In this context, it is claimed that there is a direct connection between the underdevelopment or immaturity of civil society and the frequently established dictatorships in these countries, and the struggle against dictatorship and the project of establishing civil society are intertwined. Positive values are again attributed to civil society, but this time the problem is posed as reaching the level of mature civil society in developed capitalist countries.
However, some leftist intellectuals in these countries are not in favor of keeping the limits of adopting civil society as a model so narrow. In this civil society model, the emphasis is on expanding the freedom areas of the individual and various social groups vis-à-vis the state, rather than market relations and rational capitalism.
