When trying to clarify the content of the concept of civil society, different definitions that contradict each other can be found. As a result of examining the concept of civil society, the framework that comes to the mind of many authorities is the field of public participation in voluntary associations, mass media, professional associations, unions and similar organizations. According to Hegel, civil society lies between the individual (or family) and the state. According to some thinkers, the state creates a balancing counter-area. However, according to Gramsci, this field is ultimately one of the supports of the state. But in general, civil society has been seen as the dynamic side of social movements and the concept of citizenship.
Nowadays, there is hardly a day that the media does not make reference to "Non-Governmental Organizations". These three words and their acronym (STK) have become both a "bag of words" and a symbol. In this context, the word itself and the idea it expresses have constantly developed, spread and been reclaimed from North to South. However, this sociological phenomenon, which is a real innovation of the 20th century, has also received its share of exaggerated praise and excessive criticism. In this book, Paris -I- Panthéon (Sorbonne) University Political Science faculty member Philippe Ryfman tries to shed light on these structures, whose status is not well defined and, as a result, not well known, by examining their philosophical, historical and economic foundations.
