Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Written by an anonymous poet in the late fourteenth century, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is an indirect moral lesson as well as a story of magic, fear, seduction and adventure. On Christmas Eve, a knight who bursts into Arthur's feast with a huge ax in his hand and whose horse is as green as himself invites the king to a game. The knight named Gawain, who accepts this challenge instead of the king, will be tested both physically and morally in the continuation of the story. In the poem, standard English and everyday language, Platonic love and sexuality, elegant behavior and blood and brutality, rich nature views and magnificent indoor depictions are intertwined. The classic order of knight stories also applies to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: a journey based on the search for the Holy Grail of Christ, a supernatural enemy to be dealt with, a confrontation with death, and the transformation of the knight into a more mature person at the end of this experience...
