Sıkıyönetim - Bütün Oyunları 4
DIEGO: To remain silent in the face of injustice means to lose olive bread and the right to live! Today you have to overcome your fear even to protect your bread! Wake up Spain, wake up now! The city of Cádiz determines its fate. As the plague, incarnated with fear and cruelty, is at the gates of the city, the people of Cádiz have to make a choice: to rebel against fear and oppression, or to submit to fate and power.
Martial Law, written by Albert Camus in 1948, one year after his novel The Plague, has a special place in Camus literature with its imaginative fiction, poetic language and surreal universe. The plague appears on Camus' stage as a tyrant who wants to dominate the city of Cádiz and as an opportunist who tries to take advantage of people's fears. Having left their old happy days behind, the people of Cádiz will experience the cruelty, despair and decay of the Second World War. Diego from Cádiz, who prefers to confront his fears and question his moral values and beliefs, will not give up absolute rebellion for the sake of his love for humanity, and will start a public rebellion against plague and death, even though he sometimes surrenders to his human weaknesses, anger and despair. While the martial law system established by the plague gradually gains strength by feeding on the fears of the people of Cádiz, the wind that will drive the plague away from the city is waiting for the fear in people's hearts to subside in order to blow.
