Semonides (VIIth century BC): Semonides of Amorgos was born in Samos (Samos). He was at the head of the Samian columns that settled on Amorgos Island. He became famous during his lifetime with his poems in the Iambos genre. Of the thirty or so verse fragments that have survived to the present day, the most important is the fragment he wrote on Women. Other iambos poets who wrote works in the iambos genre and are included in this book are Anonios, Susarion, Hermippos, Skythinos, Diphilos and Panarkes, respectively. All surviving fragments of Semonides and these six iambos poets are in the Hasan Âli Yücel Classics Series.
