Singing the Silence
"It has been a year since we stepped into this dream. We were in such a state. We were saying such things with a newly awakened enthusiasm within us, and going according to this voice. Me and the old me were still walking side by side..." The authors of these lines above are Yıldız Ramazanoğlu as well as Cihan Aktaş. Religious women writers such as Fatma Karabiyik Barbarosoglu, Nazife Sisman, Sibel Eraslan opened a new field of literature after the 1990s. A different, more complex and deeper literary field than Islamist guidance novels...
Elifhan Köse draws attention to the quest of the producers of this literature to confront both modernity, Kemalism, Islamism and themselves. Their troubled relationship with patriarchal discourse and feminism is an important aspect of this reckoning. According to the author, an important difference between them and feminism, which they are influenced by but cannot shake off the worry of being influenced by, may arise from "depoliticizing the details of private life with a conscious and highly selective silence". The relationship between gender culture and political structures, body image and "body discipline" is also under the lens of the book. It is a book that discusses Islamism, hijab, conservatism, women, gender, daily life and many social-political issues from the world of literature.
