Seeing Voices
Oliver Sacks, who opened the doors of new worlds to us with his books The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and The Island of the Colourblind, introduces us to the surprising richness of deaf people and sign language that we were never aware of in Seeing Voices. The author's research and testimonies on this subject reveal the subtleties and richness of another culture that we are not aware of. What does the world of the deaf look like from the world of the deaf, what do the non-deaf know about the deaf and deafness? The rebellion experienced by the deaf people, whom the author describes as "an unimaginable language and culture that is very difficult to enter from the outside", when the "hearing" candidate was elected principal among three candidates, two of whom were deaf, at Gallaudet University in 1988, is also included in the book.
