Capital and Labor Book Description

Chernyshevsky states that the subject of political economy is not wealth, as Adam Smith and his supporters claim, but the satisfaction of human vital needs at the highest level: "Since the material well-being of man depends on the objects and conditions produced by labor, political economy is the science of this material well-being."

His “theory of the working people” includes the criticism of bourgeois political economy and serfdom in general, the analysis of capitalism and the search for the economic foundations of the future socialist society. The brilliant criticism of the "natural law" and "economic freedom" dogmas of the bourgeois economic thought, which had been corrupted by that time, also belongs to Chernyshevsky.

Chernyshevsky concluded that, in principle, social sciences and political economy have a class character. In his work Capital and Labor, he argued that the dominant economic theory expresses the interests of the "class" that dominates social and economic life at every stage of social development.

Chernyshevsky maintained his realism in his analysis of the revolutionary transformation in Russia and emphasized that it was possible to liquidate the slavery law, which was a reflection of the dominant form of exploitation in the country. Chernyshevsky, who directed all his efforts to the enlightenment of the Russian peasantry and the organization of its mass movement, did not consider the development of capitalism in Russia as a regression and clearly saw the communist-socialist tendencies in the Russian peasantry.
