Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860), one of the most original and provocative thinkers of the 19th century, spent his life trying to understand the meaning of living in a world full of suffering and death and to unravel the "ever-worrying mystery of existence." He examined almost every dimension of the human being with his worldview, which found deep repercussions in modern literature, music, philosophy and psychology and still arouses interest today with his books such as Aphorisms on the Wisdom of Life, The World as Will and Design, and The Metaphysics of Love.
