The Path from War to Peace
The Greek army, which went to Izmir in 1919 to realize the "Megali Idea", was defeated by the Turkish resistance in 1922 and left Anatolia. This event, which was the "War of Independence" in terms of Turkish historiography and the "Asia Minor Disaster" in terms of Greek historiography, gradually widened the gap between the two sides of the Aegean. However, the determination of Mustafa Kemal and Venizelos to stop this trend, who were aware of how valuable the friendship to be established between Turkey and Greece would be for both the Balkans and the European geography, carried the two countries from war to peace in about ten years.
While The Road from War to Peace reveals the efforts made for peace by two leaders and other administrators who had a great impact on the fate of their countries, it also examines the debates in Greece of the period, focusing on a point that is little known for Turkey. In particular, the efforts of Venizelos, the creator of Megali Idea, to establish peace are revealed through documents published for the first time and a comprehensive archive study.
An important study that reveals the Turkish-Greek rapprochement of 1930, the relations between the newly established Republic of Turkey and Greece after the Treaty of Lausanne, and sheds light on one of the less discussed topics of our recent history.
