Savaş ve Barış-2 Cilt Takım
War and Peace is one of the first books that come to mind when "classic" is mentioned. A giant war novel about Napoleon's invasion of Russia, it is also a panorama of Russia. The social and economic conditions of Russia in the mid-1800s, life in cities, villages and towns, and large farms, the leading personalities of the period, palace life, especially the upper class, are skillfully drawn.
In the preface to the first volume, Tolstoy describes his feelings while writing War and Peace, the difficult work he did and the stages the novel went through. These texts are very important, especially because they give us the opportunity to look more closely at this giant novel through the eyes of its author.
The translation in your hand is the complete translation of War and Peace, commissioned by the then Ministry of Education to Zeki Baştımar, made between 1943 and 1949. Although Zeki Baştımar made this translation together with Nâzım Hikmet, who was in prison in Bursa at the time, Nâzım's name was never included in the book for known political reasons. Today, while this translation was published under the names of two translators upon the request of the Baştımar family, care was taken not to touch the text other than renewing words that are outdated and difficult to understand today; Instead of War and Peace in the first editions, the new title of the work, War and Peace, which had been common for years, was preferred.
