Chess
Chess begins on a cruise ship from New York to Buenos Aires. A millionaire among the passengers offers world chess champion Mirko Czentovic to play chess for money. Watching the two play, Austrian Dr. When B. cannot control himself during the game and joins the game, he is suggested to face Mirko Czentovic. Isolated in a hotel room by the Gestapo, Dr. was only taken out for questioning. B. learned all the intricacies of this game from a book he secretly obtained by chance one day. He memorized all the games, created brand new games in his mind, and filled his life with chess. Although this is the only way he has managed to maintain his sanity in isolation, this effort cannot prevent him from having a nervous breakdown: This tense story reaches its climax with his encounter with Mirko Czentovic.
Stefan Zweig wrote Chess while he was in exile in Brazil and completed it a few months before his suicide in February 1942. This long story, wandering through the dark labyrinths of the human soul, is a powerful criticism of national socialism and fascism with its intricate characters and psychological analysis.
