Masculinity Between the Lines
I saw discussing social masculinity through male characters in novels as a means of taking a closer look at my masculinity and our masculinity. As I traced the masculinities hidden between the lines, I witnessed once again that what most of us men think is "hidden" is actually open and even smiling.
The essence of masculinity does not change that much according to periods, countries, continents and cultures; It was enough to look at three continents and four countries to understand that the difference between masculinities differs not in substance but in form.
The reason why I chose the novels How to Do It, Cement, Mandarins, The Woman Sitting in the Orange Tree, One Day Alone; It is about revolutionary, socialist or leftist characters. Additionally, these are books read by revolutionary men, and these books either directly discuss masculinity or provide an opportunity to discuss masculinity.
Madonna in a Fur Coat, unlike other books, does not have a revolutionary or leftist male character. His inclusion in this study can be seen as a tribute to Sabahattin Ali. This is because he bravely discussed masculinity in the field of literature in a period that can be considered as early as 1940.
I have no doubt that there are many friends who have read these novels. I chose the minimum summary method to remind them, to provide minimum information to those who have never read the books, and to create integrity in character analysis.
