Is art free? Is thought against the freedom of the artist in artistic creation? Is an art free from ideals possible? Does social thought kill the spirit of art or does it add a new content and dynamism to it? In The Principle of Art, Proudhon problematizes all these questions through Courbet, the representative of the realistic style, and his works that created a lot of controversy at the time they were made, defines the new style in its relationship with other artists and styles of the period, and in this way puts forward the principle that he sees as the social route of art. Throughout the work, Proudhon follows an art-historical and anachronistic method, while on the other hand, he investigates the philosophical possibilities of both a critical and free art.
