Art/Politics Art and Cultural Politics in the Age of Culture
Does art include or exclude politics? Or is art a completely different politics? Or... the life of art; Does the power of imagination to transform reality threaten conventional politics? Is this why Plato expelled the poets from his ideal city? What role do the aestheticization of politics and the popularization of art play in the structuring of autocratic cultures? Have the political and artistic utopias of modernity gone bankrupt? Are we at the end of art and politics? Walter Benjamin, Hal Foster, Lev Kreft and the star of contemporary aesthetics, Jacques Rancière, deal with such eternal debates in the first part of the Art/Politics compilation and look for the traces of the hopes promised by art. In his Introduction article, in which he examines the transformation of "art" and "politics", especially today, Lev Kreft sheds light on the art history that gave rise to these discussions. In the second part of the review, Serge Guilbaut, Renata Salecl and Brian Wallis examine striking examples of how cultural policies establish power over art: How did New York, after the Second World War, create a cultural hegemony over Europe by appropriating modernism, the invention of Paris? How does the relationship between contemporary arts and contemporary wars appear in the collection of advertising emperor Charles Saatchi?
How was art managed in the legitimation of the September 12 Coup in Turkey?
