Illich, one of the most radical writers of opposition discourse, is known mostly for his criticisms of institutions. He says that the most important areas of human life such as education, politics and medicine have been institutionalized, and the basic needs that people used to meet more directly have been reduced to the consumption of scientifically produced services in contemporary society, thus destroying individual characteristics and creativity. In "The Usurpation of Health", the medical institution is seen as an uncontrollable authority. It poses a great threat to our health when it determines what is a disease, who is sick, and what should be done to patients; it violates our rights over our bodies; it strengthens the diseased structure of society by encouraging drug consumption; He explains that it destroys their potential to cope personally and autonomously. According to Illich, industrial societies are pathogenic; because it makes people unable to cope with their environment, their own autonomous realities. First, he offers prosthetic solutions to the lives he destroys by making them sick. Doctors in white uniforms leave patients defenseless by speaking a language they do not understand; increases patients' dependence on themselves; They numb them with the drugs they give them, thus depriving them of their right to suffer, and on the other hand, prevent them from enjoying life. Thus, people who remain passive towards life and themselves begin to seek satisfaction in stronger stimuli: Examples such as the widespread desire to seek power over other people, the ever-increasing stress of employees, the exposure of crime and violence in the media as a means of attraction... are all the results of this passivization. Gaspı offers the reader a conceptual framework to use to discuss the downsides of medicine, as well as its much-emphasized benefits. While emphasizing the necessity of a multifaceted criticism of industrial societies, it enables us to look critically at the medical institution that occupies our lives as a power/authority.
