Roshalde is a sad mansion housing a family on the verge of disintegration. While the painter father, disappointed by his unhappy marriage, retreated to his castle and stays in his workshop in the garden, his pianist wife and their young son, who is the last bond holding them together, live in the mansion. When the younger son dies from a fatal disease, the family disperses, never to be united again: While the father decides to devote himself to his art and go to India, the mother steps into an uncertain future with her eldest son. The doors of Rosshalde close, perhaps never to be opened again. Rosshalde, written by Hermann Hesse in 1914, bears traces from the author's own life: Painting was a part of Hesse's artistic personality. Known for his closeness to Eastern culture, Hesse went on a long journey to India in 1911 and separated from his first wife in 1919.
