Romantik Muamma

Romanticism is primitiveness and naivety; is youth, life; It is the natural person's enthusiastic sense of life. But it is also wilt, fever, decadence and the "disease of the century." Romance is death. It is the wild, the grotesque, the mystical, the supernatural, moonlight, magical castles, giants, running water, darkness, irrationality and the unspeakable. It is also familiarity, tradition, and the joy in the smiling face of nature. Romance is ancient, historical, gothic cathedrals. Pursuit of innovation, revolutionary change, passion for living in the present, rejection of knowledge, past and future, consciousness of timelessness. It is nostalgia, dream, sweet and bitter melancholy, loneliness, longing for home, the feeling of alienation. It is energy, power, will; but it is also self-torture, self-exhaustion and suicide. Romanticism is fidelity to the singular. It is both beautiful and ugly. It is both "art for art's sake" and "art as a means of social liberation". Power and weakness, individualism and collectivism, revolution and counter-revolution, peace and war, loving life and wanting death. It means both believing in God and finding the strength to rebel against him. It is the aestheticization of religion and the divinization of art. Romance is an enigma.
