Montesquieu (1689-1755): One of the most important thinkers of the Enlightenment period. Born in La Brède, he studied law. He was a member of the Bordeaux parliament and served as a judge. He was elected to the Bordeaux Academy and published articles. He gained fame with his Persian Letters and devoted his life to his theoretical and literary works. He made great contributions to political theory, sociology and philosophy of law, especially his work On the Spirit of Laws. Reflections on the Causes of the Greatness and Decline of the Romans, published in 1734, is the author's first work that comes into direct contact with social sciences. This work, in which the author subjects the people and institutions of the Roman Empire to a historical analysis in a style reminiscent of classical Latin writers; It is far ahead of its counterparts in terms of its language, bearing the core of political science and the author's most important work, On the Spirit of Laws, and containing brand new ideas that will turn into concepts in the future. After Persian Letters, On the Spirit of the Laws, this fundamental work of the author meets the readers in the Hasan Âli Yücel Classics Series.
