Montesquieu (1689-1755): One of the most important thinkers of the Enlightenment period. Born in La Brède, he studied law. He was a member of the Bordeaux parliament and served as a judge. He made great contributions to political theory, sociology and philosophy of law, especially his work On the Spirit of Laws.
