Montesquieu (1689-1755): One of the most important thinkers of the Enlightenment period. Born in La Brède, he studied law. He was a member of the Bordeaux parliament and served as a judge. He was elected to the Bordeaux Academy and published articles. He gained fame with his Persian Letters and devoted his life to his theoretical and literary works. He made great contributions to political theory, sociology and philosophy of law, especially his work On the Spirit of Laws. Reflections on the Causes of the Greatness and Decline of the Romans, published in 1734, is the author's first work that comes into direct contact with social sciences.
