Rachel Reckons with God
The people depicted in Zweig's legends always maintain their hope that they will find the meaning of their lives while searching for God and themselves. In Rachel Reckoning with God, the author narrates the stories of Rachel and Jacob in the Old Testament in a style reminiscent of the narrative in the Bible, and of course, by adding his own interpretation. He wrote The Story of the Third Dove, inspired by Noah's Flood. The third dove sent by Noah to see whether the waters had receded after the flood did not return. However, in Zweig's story, the reason why the dove does not return is not because the soil dries out as in the Old Testament, but because it sees death and disaster everywhere. The Eyes of the Immortal Brother, inspired by the Bhagavad Gita, is about a warrior named Virata. The eyes of his brother, whom he unknowingly killed in a war, follow Virata everywhere. Even though he tries to live his life away from people, free from sin, he will not prevent his actions from affecting other people's lives.
