In this book, Eagleton discusses the concept of sacrifice, which is located at the intersection of disciplines such as philosophy, politics, literature and theology and forms the basis of both ancient societies and the modern social order. In his own words, he tries to trace the concept of sacrifice, which modern philosophy, especially Marxists, avoids paying attention to by finding it too theological, in the texts of the apostles, ancient philosophers, theologians, and philosophers and men of letters closer to the present day, from Hegel to Derrida, from Shakespeare to Henry James. . When the subject is so widespread and layered, we find ourselves in the middle of interdisciplinary dialogues and a parade of literary figures from Aeneas to King Lear, from Patrick Melrose to Anna Karenina.

Concepts such as crucifixion and tragedy, blessed and cursed, thanatos and eros, testimony and morality, exchange and excess, scapegoat and gift, which are closely related to the concept of sacrifice, constitute the different layers of the general discussion in the book, which can also be traced in theology, philosophy and literature.

Complaining that "sacrifice" has been interpreted one-sidedly and incorrectly for a long time, Eagleton associates the idea of "radical sacrifice", as he formulated it, with politics and revolution, and sees in this idea the potential for a revolutionary transformation that will enrich life. As a matter of fact, it opposes postmodern thought movements that highlight the purely destructive and destructive aspects of sacrifice and tries to explain its more "life-giving" aspects. He tries to reinstate the notion of sacrifice with a striking intellectual approach that blends Christian theology, Marxist ideology and semiotics with psychoanalysis and brings together the magical world of literature.
