Pragmatism

As of today's common usage, the connotations of the words "pragmatic", "pragmatist", "pragmatism" have negative meanings: The philosophical theory behind Machiavellianism, blind materialism, and the recklessness specific to wild capitalism is always seen as pragmatism. Moreover, it is possible to say that this is the case both in Europe and America. So what really is pragmatism as a philosophical approach? Pragmatism, which was first published in 1907 and is, in his own words, "the most important work" of William James, one of the founders of the philosophy of pragmatism, brings together the lectures the philosopher gave at the Lowell Institute and Columbia University. It examines in detail the conceptual framework of pragmatism, its "mediator" quality, its meaning as a "theory of truth", how effective the pragmatic method is in some philosophical problems, its position against rationalism, empiricism and idealism, and its relationship with religion.
