Pornography
Back Cover Article (From the Promotional Bulletin)
Witold, a subtle and introverted character Narrated through the eyes of the main character named Gombrowcz, Pornography tells the strange, uncanny adventures of a group of people stuck in the sultry environment of a country house in Romania under Hitler's occupation. The protagonist and his friend believe that, in this mansion where they are hosted, -perhaps under the influence of some emptiness and the tension in the outside world- the young couple, their childhood friends, who are also guests, are secretly meeting. However, when the young woman's fiancé shows up at the mansion, the relationship built on an assumption, or even a simple fantasy, suddenly becomes reality and forms a dangerous triangle. This network of relationships, which includes sexuality, deeply corrupt social relations, and perhaps even death with its fear and instinct, will create convulsions in all layers of the human soul, from top to bottom.
Pornography, published in 1960, It was published in 1960, approximately twenty years after his first novel, Ferdydurke, which made the author famous. Although it reflects the themes of the author's previous novels, it is fundamentally different from them. We present Pornography, in which the author's cruel satire resonates more strongly and the scalpel he strikes goes deeper, with Osman Firat Bas's translation from the Polish original.
“He actually had no respect for literature, he disdained it as a ritual of snobbery. Even if he wrote it, he wrote it as an attempt to get rid of the accepted rules.”
