Peter Camenzind
Peter Camenzind, in which autobiographical elements predominate, as in his novel Between the Wheels, is the first novel that made its author Hermann Hesse instantly famous. Peter, the son of a Swiss farmer, spent his youth in a remote village and then became interested in literature during his university education. The drowning death of his musician friend Richard during a trip together and his incompetence in his relationships with women lead him to unhappiness. His successes in the field of literature cannot save him from depression and alcohol addiction. Finally he returns to his essence. Peter Camenzind's discontent and quest are not directed towards political conditions; partly towards himself, for whom he wants more than he can do, and partly towards society, which he criticizes in a youthful way. The world and humanity, which he has not had much opportunity to know, are too saturated, too self-indulgent, too flat and standard in his eyes. Peter wants to live freer, more active, more beautiful, more noble than them; He thinks from the beginning that there is no harmony between himself and the world; However, he does not realize how much that world attracts and seduces him.
'I love this deep and masterfully created story for the humanity it contains. Some of the things in it are things that I felt in my childhood and then lost... And then those two love scenes: these are just like the events I experienced in my own life.'
