Parma Monastery
The Monastery of Parma is a story of madness and courage that blends romance and youthful excitement with political intrigue.
-Stendhal-
The Monastery of Parma, written by Stendhal in less than two months and described by Balzac as the greatest French novel of the age, tells the story of Fabrizio, the second son of the aristocratic del Dongo family. Fabrizio is a headstrong, naive, idealistic young man, as a child who is more attracted to his illegitimate French father, who fights for Napoleon, than to his ultra-conservative legitimate father, who spies on behalf of Austria. On the other hand, he has a handsomeness that impresses women. Even though he had no preparation, he throws himself into the middle of the Battle of Waterloo. He returns to Italy after the defeat. Thus begins the journey of the protagonist of Parma Monastery, one of Stendhal's most important works, first in prison and then in the monastery, full of love stories and palace intrigues.
"Stendhal taught me to understand war. You should read the Battle of Waterloo many times in Parma Abbey."
-Tolstoy-"
"The Monastery of Parma is one of the most beautiful novels we have."
-Henry James-
