Pope and Mussolini
Back Cover Text (From the Promotional Bulletin)
Sick, elderly, having barely recovered from the circulatory system disorder of the previous year, Pope Pius XI. Pius was begging God to grant him a few more days. She was sitting at her desk in her white dress in her office on the third floor of the Vatican; His cane was leaning against the wall nearby. His rusty barometer and compass, dating back to his time climbing the peaks of Italy's highest mountains, lay aside as a souvenir of long-ago days. An old tuning fork was also found in a drawer. He was God's representative on earth. He couldn't die without saying what he had to say.

It marked the tenth anniversary of the historic treaty signed by Pius XII with Italian dictator Mussolini, which ended decades of hostility between Italy and the Roman Catholic Church. This treaty ended the separation of church and state that had characterized modern Italy since its founding sixty-eight years earlier, and ushered in a new era in which the Church was a willing partner of Mussolini's fascist government...
