Panchatantra - Five Books-Hardcover
Pañçatantra, which was translated into written literature by Vishṇusharman, who lived during the Gupta Empire period (4th century AD), which is considered the golden age of India, and is considered to be a brāhmaṇ, is one of the oldest and richest examples of fables in world literature.
The work, which consists of five books dealing with a certain subject in itself, is based on the education of the three sons of the king of the country of Mahilāropya, named Amaraşakti, who lack common sense, are arrogant and ignorant. The king is very unhappy because of the ignorance of his sons, to whom he will entrust his country after him. He assigns the scholars in his palace to find a solution to this situation. However, scholars say that the only person who can correct this situation is a brāhmaṇ named Vishṇusharman. Thereupon, the king summons Vishṇusharman. Vishṇusharman promises the king that he will make his sons educated within six months. The king is very happy about this and entrusts his sons to him.
Taking the princes with him, Vishṇusharman creates a five-part tantra for them. These are: “Mitrabhedaḥ” (Breakdown of Friendship), “Mitrasamprāptiḥ” (Gain of Friendship), “Kākolūkīyam” (Crows and Owls), “Labdhapraṇāşam” (Loss of Gained Things) and “Aparīkşitakārakam” (End of Thoughtless Action). Thus, as promised, Vishṇusharman transforms the three princes into perfect scholars within six months.
We should point out that Pañçatantra, which is full of rich aphorisms and contains tales intertwined with the verses of the next as one ends, is a management book, in other words, a kind of political book, full of valuable information about Indian social life.
