Hans Schnier, despite being the son of a wealthy family, chose clowning as a profession. Since he was unwilling to get married and raise his children with a Catholic upbringing, he was abandoned by his lover, who could not resist social pressure. Hans was devastated by this loss, and his art came to the point of extinction.
When The Clown was published in 1963, it caused great controversy in Germany, and Heinrich Böll was accused of being anti-religious. However, the author emphasizes that an "eccentric" individual could not find a place for himself in bourgeois society after World War II due to its narrow-mindedness and distorted morality. He expresses the most shocking truths behind the clown's mask; it slaps the reader in the face with the cruelties, empty rules and unfair pressures of daily life. Clown make-up is actually a mask in which the individual hides his pain, desires, and hopes.
There is a beautiful saying: nothing. Don't think of anything. Don't think of the Prime Minister, don't think of the Catholics either. Think of that clown crying in the bathtub, dripping coffee on his slippers.
