The story of the young actress Katya, who cannot find a place in the art circle of 19th century Moscow, and the professor, who now thinks that death is waiting in wait, the story of these two people who have lost hope, going beyond the superficial realities of life, is one of the mature works of the master of the genre, Chekhov.
