Horace Walpole (1717-1797): English art historian, writer and Earl of Oxford. He was born as the son of Prime Minister Robert Walpole. He was educated at Eton and Cambridge, traveled around Europe, and entered parliament in 1741. He withdrew from politics in 1768 and devoted himself to writing. His most important works are Historic Doubts Upon The Life and Death of Richard III. Historical Doubts Concerning the Life and Death of Richard] and The Castle of Otranto. He owes his fame as a writer to his letters, which began to be published in 1798. The Castle of Otranto, first published in 1764, is generally considered the first Gothic novel. Dreams, secret passages, ghosts, etc. specific to Gothic novels are included in literature. This work, which adds elements of horror and mystery, created a brand new tradition and deeply influenced the Gothic literature generation that came after it, especially Ann Radcliffe, Bram Stoker and Matthew Lewis. The work also represents the culmination of the Goth/Gothic debates in the 18th century.
