Why do people need authority? Why are they afraid of authority? Is the plan to establish a society without authority relations realistic? Is it possible to reject authority without establishing a connection with it? What can we do if a simple opposition is not enough to protect us from the negativities of authority, but also prevents us from evaluating it as we should? While looking for answers to such questions, Richard Sennett draws a historical and sociopsychological panorama of the special and institutionalized relationships that people establish with authorities. It explains what kind of impasses can lead people to when rejecting authority without recognizing it in personal relationships, such as between parents and children, or in social relationships, such as between employers and employees, or between the state and citizens. Drawing on Hegel's famous analysis of the slave-master relationship, he suggests that we first stop seeing authority as an Other and try to recognize it and make it "visible and understandable". While he says that trying to establish a world that does not contain any authority relations is not a possible and meaningful effort because humans are social beings, the most important thing is to transform authority from being a tool of domination into a form that does not include indifference towards other human beings, and this can only be achieved by It emphasizes that those who are exposed to authority can do it. While he brings a few concrete suggestions that he thinks can serve this transformation, he states that more can actually be done and calls us all to use our imagination and creativity against authority.
