Western Music in the Ottoman Empire

Sultans composed compositions, built theaters and watched concerts and operas, and hosted foreign musicians. Military music schools and bands were established in the armies. Western music became an indispensable element of state ceremonies. The official anthem was composed and played during each reign. Muzıka-i Hümâyun, affiliated with the Ottoman Palace; He played an important role in the popularization of Western music with his orchestra, band and opera groups, and handed over his legacy to today's Presidential Symphony Orchestra and Turkish Armed Forces Harmony Band.

Palace; He supported theatres, opened music schools, bought pianos for schools, published music books, and rewarded composers and musicians. He rewarded many musicians, composers and instrument makers from Europe and America with titles, decorations and medals.

The music market centered in Beyoğlu (Pera), which started with the activities of music teachers, musicians, music stores, publishers, music schools and theaters, grew with the arrival of the phonograph, gramophone and cinema. Western music; It influenced the Turkish music culture in many areas such as education, performance, notation, publishing and composition. This work, which sheds light on the adventure of Western music in the Ottoman Empire, was prepared by making use of hundreds of Ottoman documents and newspaper news.
