History of Money in the Ottoman Empire
For the Ottomans, coins were one of the two most important symbols of sovereignty, along with the sermon. As gold and silver coins moved from hand to hand and from region to region, they carried the power of the ruler to the farthest corners of the country. The Ottomans were aware that there was a strong relationship between the abundance of money and its circulation in the markets and the health and vitality of trade and economy. They had to live and struggle with precious metal shortages and their negative effects on the economy, but were generally flexible and pragmatic in monetary matters.
