Osmanlı Dönemi ve Sonrası Ülkesinde Devlet, İnanç ve Millet
Current standard narratives of Ottoman, Balkan, and Middle Eastern history emphasize the role of nationalism in the transformation of the region. Anscombe argues that, in fact, religious affiliations were the most effective element shaping social identity during the Ottoman period, that religion shaped the relationship between state and society, and that it still continues to do so in the lands once occupied by the Ottomans. To illustrate this argument, the book examines the fundamental transformations of the 19th century and the post-Ottoman independence period.
“An extremely accomplished and elegant analysis of an extraordinarily complex, geographically diverse, and often misunderstood region.”
—Benjamin C. Fortna, SOAS, University of London-
“Anscombe's versatile and profound expertise as a historian of the Ottoman Empire is evident throughout the book.”
–Hasan Kayalı, University of California, San Diego-
“This book breaks away from the familiar emphasis on ethnic identities, secularization and the Ottoman legacy, and focuses on religion and transformations by making them independent. Anscombe is provocative but never reductive or simplistic.”
–Michael A. Reynolds, Princeton University-
