European Economic Expansion and Resistance in the Ottoman Empire 1881-1908
How was the reaction of the Ottoman subjects shaped in the 19th century, as the Ottoman Empire's position against the European economic power weakened and the influence of this power on the empire increased? Was there only a reaction related to economic processes, or did individuals and groups put forward different motives? What were the forms and contents of the resistance and articulations discussed? Quataert focuses on previously unexamined aspects of Ottoman social life in this work, in which he discusses the interaction styles, attitudes and resistance practices of the Ottomans against European economic expansion, especially those shaped by mining, railway, tobacco management and port enterprises. “How did the emerging European-dominated world economy change the ways in which people in the Middle East earned their living, their social status, and their political behavior? (...) The social aspect of the Ottoman story remains to be fundamentally examined. Therefore, I decided to examine the changes that occurred in the population, in groups other than the elite, when the expansion of capital investment and the increase in trade reached their highest point in the late 19th century.” -Donald Quataert-
