The Middle East and the Construction of the Modern World
Middle East and the Construction of the Modern World Book Description
In The Middle East and the Making of the Modern World, Cyrus Schayegh discusses the region known as Bilad al-Sham (Greater Syria), which today includes Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel/Palestine, with its extraordinary transformation at the beginning of the 20th century. It first focuses on the cities that add their difference to the geography by reaching back to the history of the region.
It places the economic, social and political ties between these cities, the factors affecting these ties, the influence of colonial states and the changes created by the post-Ottoman nation states in the region within the framework of their interaction with each other. It examines the Middle East, where cities, regions and states are intertwined and space becomes the main actor as a transformative power.
“This book is a commentary on the socio-spatial formation of the modern Middle East. It asks why, how and at what stages well-established cities and regions shaped the dynamic modern world economy and powerful modern states. In response, how were cities and regions reshaped? And what does the example of the Middle East tell us about the world as a whole?”
