Middle East: Resistance, Revolution, Imperialism
On December 17, 2010, Muhammad Bouazizi, the world's most famous hawker, set himself on fire in front of the municipality in Sidi Bouzid, a Tunisian town with a thirty percent unemployment rate. Muhammad, whose property had been confiscated earlier in the day, was subjected to humiliation when he went to complain. His self-immolation sparked protests that would reach the Tunisian capital ten days later. The wave of mobilization, rebellion and resistance experienced in the Middle East in recent years started with this event. Even before Bouazizi, people set themselves on fire as if they were rebelling against the fate of the Middle East in the face of behavior that offended their dignity. However, when the wave of rebellion and resistance that started in Tunisia in 2010 spread throughout the Middle East, Bouazizi became a flag.
This book, compiled by Y. Dogan Çetinkaya, discusses the recent events in the Middle East on the axis of a comprehensive historical-political evaluation. On the one hand, the rebellion, resistance, revolution and social/political movements in the Middle East from the end of the 18th century to the present constitute a line of discussion. On the other hand, the Iranian Revolution is discussed in the light of the developments that took place during the revolution and its aftermath. In the middle of these two lines, Egypt, as the longest-lasting example of recent experience, is placed at the center and examined in detail; society, economy, politics, army and opposition are subjected to a comprehensive analysis. Middle East: Resistance, Revolution, Imperialism, consisting of articles by Doğan Çetinkaya, James Gelvin, Hazem Kandil, Farhad Khosrokhavar, Mete Çubukçu, Yüksel Taskin, offers an in-depth look at what is happening in the Middle East.
