Army and Nation
“The rhetoric of the bond between the nation and its army became widespread and was widely used by both civilians and army members. At the heart of this theory of the organic relationship between army and nation stood the influence of writers who underlined the need to create 'armed nations' to meet the challenges of future war between industrialized countries. (…) These theories, which were strongly influenced by the social Darwinist theories of the period and heralded all-out military preparation in the interwar period, were accepted in states such as Germany and the Ottoman Empire. (…) This situation intensified after the war.”
The fates of Germany and Turkey were tied together during the First World War, and the military alliance brought common defeat in 1918. Although the process resulted in a devastating treaty for Germany and a "success story" for Turkey, the two countries went through disruptive changes after the war. Both saw themselves as victims of the new imperialist order, whose main representatives were England and France. In both countries, radical militarism developed along with nationalism, which strengthened as a reaction to this.
Historian Emre Sencer examines the dominant influence of military culture in 1930s Germany and Turkey, which offer a meaningful comparison opportunity within this framework, although they of course have radical differences. We see the role that the perspective of military officers played in shaping politics and culture throughout the interwar period.
