The Evening of the Former Age
Those were other days. The days when the age did not ruthlessly close on our faces. These are the days when we believe that history will remain faithful to the appointment it has given us.
Ömer F. Oyal, who received the NDS 2019 Literature Award for his novel Time Stains, meets readers with its new edition. In this novel, the author focuses on the good and bad jokes and surprises of life, time, and history, while taking us on a tour through politics, existential troubles, and dreams in daily life.
The mind of our revolutionary hero, who lives in Istanbul, travels from Shanghai to Managua, While the previous century, from Munich to Beijing, from Moscow to Berlin, from Athens to Saigon, was full of dreams, we find it in the troubles of the new century. After all, “Legend may give you the power to die, but it does not enable you to live.”
An impressive novel set in an age where everyone creates their own home...
TASTER
“He was making a fuss. I didn't mind. I remember clearly staring after him for a while as he ran into the street. I watched him until he entered the third door inside the street. He was indeed entering a tavern. I understood his efforts to relax with raki after years of fighting. Fatigue leads to resentment. However, the age we had just entered was the age of boredom. Weariness was flowing everywhere, from the gutters of the buildings, from the darkened sky, from the broken sentences in the meetings, from the tired repetition of slogans, from the caustic on the posters abandoned to oblivion on the walls. Defeat was too lively to compare with reality. It's not possible for me to see Ceyda tonight. I kept repeating this over and over to avoid disappointment due to false hope. There was a completely dark magic of an unknown world in wondering about a nightclub woman. I kept walking under the rain, forgetting time and movement. It was as if a bud inside me was persistently pointing to Ceyda, reminding me of the fresh warmth I felt in front of the computer the day I was beaten. On the other hand, I was secretly ashamed. I was ashamed not of Nazlı, but of the story about myself that I had carefully constructed for years.”
