Suffering from Death
The Suffering from Death, written by Guy de Maupassant in the last years of his life, describes with a surprising richness of detail the love of a painter on the verge of old age for his lover's daughter. The novel mirrors the life of the painter Olivier Bertin, who tries to trace his lost youth in the beautiful daughter of his noble lover, as well as the desperate resistance of his mistress, the Countess of Guilleroy, against aging.
Considered one of Maupassant's best novels, The Pain of Death is the product of the period when the author's interest turned from brothels and prostitutes to aristocracy and women of the noble class. Far from telling a conventional love adventure, this XIX novel reveals the complex nature of human beings. We present the 19th century novel with Tahsin Yücel's translation.
