Neoliberal Urban Policies and Fener-Balat-Ayvansaray
In 1998, a conservation project started in cooperation with UNESCO, the EU and Fatih Municipality, which aims to protect both the architectural texture of the region and its inhabitants. Before this project, Fener, Balat and Ayvansaray were historical districts whose names were known only to their residents and enthusiasts, hidden from sight, and where modest people lived in their small multi-storey houses with bay windows.
This book, which contains academic articles on the history, present and future of these ancient districts, is a step towards drawing attention to the problematic approaches in urban renewal projects for these areas by making the historical and social values of the region more visible.
