nana
Émile Zola (1840-1902): Zola, one of the most important representatives of the naturalism movement, argued that the novelist should not only record the events like a spectator, but also handle emotional and social events like a chemist, while subjecting people and their passions to a series of experiments. Zola examined the ruins of the old world in which he lived and tried to determine the facts of a future world. With this intention, he produced many great works, especially the Rougon-Macquarts series, which consists of twenty novels that he wrote in twenty-two years. Nana (Paris Life), the ninth book of this series about the Second Empire Period, was first published as a book in 1880. In this novel, Zola unmasks the aristocracy and bourgeoisie with the help of a prostitute named Nana, who brings disaster to every life around her; He open-heartedly describes the corruption and hypocrisy that appear under the mask, without compromising reality even for a moment. In Nana, Zola created a Parisian myth, as Flaubert said, and presented a prostitute archetype to literature.
