Becoming Muslim, Staying German
The existence of Islam in the Western world has been debated for a long time. Security vigilance and Islamophobia around the "terrorist threat" after September 11 are a prominent but obscuring aspect of this debate. The increasing population and activity of Muslim immigrant communities in Europe is the subject of broader and deeper sociological interest. There are also Westerners who chose Islam and converted to Islam. Esra Özyürek, in her research that is not limited to ideologies and large-scale sociological observations but also penetrates daily life, focuses on how Westerners who are Muslims became Muslims, in the case of Germany. Both what kind of conversion experience they went through and how they embraced Islam, and how they experienced this after becoming Muslims... "They had kept a distance." This is a basic observation of Özyürek. Efforts to give Islamic life as "German an appearance" as possible are also an aspect of this truth. The reason why converted Germans/Europeans "remain Muslims or continue to practice Islam despite not being fully accepted into the Ummah is the Salafis". Özyürek connects this key observation with the following critical question: Will the Salafist movement leave its mark on the future of Islam in Europe?
