Mozart
In the court music tradition in which Mozart grew up, musicians were seen as a kind of craftsmen at best, so the only expectation from them was to entertain the courtiers. For this reason, Mozart, who is considered a genius today, had to constantly rush to find a job throughout his short life, and the only job he could find was as an organist in a small palace in Salzburg.
According to Elias, Mozart failed because he pursued his independence in a society that was not ready for it. When the Viennese aristocracy turned their backs on him, he had to live unemployed and in debt. He was unable to compose the works he wanted most and died believing that he had lived a meaningless life.
Mozart reveals the tragic consequences of the confrontation between individual creativity and social taste that tries to control it.
