Moll Flanders
In Moll Flanders, Defoe presents his ideas about society and morality to the reader through the mouth of one of the most striking female narrators in the history of English literature.
Born in Newgate Prison in London and abandoned by her mother, Moll begins a life full of incest, pickpocketing, prostitution and husband hunting in the criminal world she was introduced to at an early age. He visits the new continent, which is still in colonies; He makes marriages, goes back and forth between poverty and wealth, and finally finds himself returning to the life he was born in England. Moll tells her life story with such enthusiasm and pleasure that it is still being debated centuries later whether she is a repentant or a master liar.
“What makes Defoe a great writer is that he makes me forget my class, personality and conditions, and elevates me while reading him, turning me into a 'universal human'.”
-Samuel Taylor Coleridge-
