Mızraklar, Mızraklar Tüfekler, Tüfekler
"Why are there no strikes in the arms industry?" Saramago begins his last novel, which he could not complete, in order to find an answer to this question that bothered him towards the end of his life. The novel's opening question has an extremely vital and current ethical meaning: The dark history of the weapons-producing factories shows that any strike attempt was bloodily suppressed. This production, which never stops and is carried on by force in weapons factories, actually represents the never-ending wars in the world.
Will Artur, who works in an arms factory and has no goal other than being promoted to the heavy weapons department, follow his idealist wife Felícia and reveal the dark role that the factory where he works dutifully played in the Spanish Civil War? In other words, will he be able to succeed in "starting a rebellion of virtue in conditions of collapse", a principle that Saramago frequently emphasizes in his texts? Together with other texts written on it, it invites the reader to complete the novel and pursue the ethical questions asked.
