Life in Mississippi complements the books The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which are considered the beginning of American literature according to many famous authors. Twain talks about the geography of Mississippi, which has the largest river in America, as a living, breathing creature and points to it as the most important character in his book.

Life on the Mississippi is a memoir written by Twain while he was working as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the Civil War. The book also includes Twain's detailed travelogue to the region years after the Civil War.

The book, which tells the story from the golden age of the region to the difficulties of the civil war, is the work that best defines Mark Twain's literary personality, with its partly fictional and partly real structure.
